6 April, 2010 (Hong Kong) – The 34th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF) recorded an overwhelming response from audiences with 80,000 tickets sold representing 136 sold-out screenings - a 6% increase over 2009.
Screening over 290 titles from more than 50 countries including 65 World, Asian and International premieres, the number of accredited press members increased by 28% from 22 countries - more than a 20% increase in country representation over the past year.
Shaw Soo Wei, Executive Director of HKIFFS said, “We are delighted to see such enthusiasm to the HKIFF from both the local and international audiences and filmmakers who embraced the innovative films and events created to deliver an exceptional festival this year.” Shaw continues, “The HKIFF is now firmly established as the place for Asian and Global film premieres, thanks to the support of Hong Kong audiences.”
After a 17-day season, the curtain dropped on the 34th HKIFF today with a star-studded press conference presenting the closing films: the World Premiere of Ex directed by one of the youngest up-and-coming female directors - Heiward Mak and the Asian Premiere of Amphetamine directed by Scud, who astonished the audiences with last year’s HKIFF World Premiere of Permanent Residence. The complete director’s cut of Amphetamine will be screened at the festival.
Also in attendance at today’s press conference were the cast members of Ex: Gillian Chung, William Chan, Michelle Wai, Derek Tsang, and Lawrence Chou; and Amphetamine : Byron Pang, Thomas Price, and Winnie Leung.
The 35th HKIFF will take place from 20 March to 5 April, 2011 and will be held concurrently with the Asian Film Awards (AFA) on 21 March 2010 and the Hong Kong-Asia Film Financing Forum (HAF) from 21 to 23 March 2010.
