Acclaimed Actress/Filmmaker Sylvia Chang Joins
Board of Hong Kong International Film Festival Society

 

25 August, 2010 (Hong Kong) – The Hong Kong International Film Festival Society (HKIFFS) today announced that renowned actress, screenwriter, producer and director Sylvia Chang has joined the HKIFFS Board of Directors in the role of Vice Chairman. Chang, known internationally for her role in the 1998 Oscar-winning drama The Red Violin as well as the Berlin Film Festival Competition title 20.30.40which she directed, is one of Asia’s most respected and multifaceted talents, with an astonishing career that has spanned over three decades.

Sylvia Chang began her career as an actress in the 1970s, later gaining acclaim for her roles in Edward Yang’s That Day, on the Beach (1983), Tsui Hark’s Shanghai Blues (1984) and Stanley Kwan’s Full Moon in New York (1990), among others. After making her directorial debut in 1979, she went on to helm critically lauded works such as Passion (1986), Siao Yu (1995) and Tempting Heart (1999). She has won the Golden Horse Award three times for her acting, and at the Hong Kong Film Awards she won Best Screenplay for Tempting Heart along with two other Best Actress prizes. Her career has been the subject of tributes at film festivals in London, Bangkok and Toronto, and she has served on the jury of the Berlin Film Festival.

“As one of Asia's oldest and most respected film festivals, we have followed Sylvia Chang’s career since the 1970s,” says Wilfred Wong, Chairman of the HKIFFS Board of Directors. “To have someone with a wealth of experience and talent as Sylvia Chang as a member of our Board is a great honour. We believe that her special insight will help the HKIFFS grow tremendously in the years to come.”

“It’s such a challenge to take up a post that I’m not familiar with, yet I believe that this is related to what I’ve been doing for the past 40 years. As such, I gladly accept and am sincerely committed to my duty as Vice Chairman for the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society,” says Chang.

The HKIFFS Board of Directors also welcomed new members Vincent Chow, Director & Group General Manager of Chow Sang Sang Holdings International Limited; Alan Wong, Former Special Advisor at Cathay Pacific Airways Limited; and the new Honorary Treasurer Alexander Mak, Managing Director of Mazars Tax Services Limited.
