23 April 2017 (Hong Kong) – The Closing Film of the 41st Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), mon mon mon MONSTERS, made its World Premiere at Hong Kong Cultural Centre tonight, with the acclaimed Taiwanese director Giddens KO, producer Angie CHAI, casts Kent TSAI, Eugenie LIU, Yukai DENG and Carolyn CHEN all in attendance. KO's feature debut, You Are the Apple of My Eye, was selected by the Summer International Film Festival as the Opening Film in 2011, and became the record-breaking box-office hit in Hong Kong. This year, his work is once again premiered in the HKIFF.
Director Giddens KO said, “I am honoured that mon mon mon MONSTERS is selected as the closing film and makes it World Premiere right here in Hong Kong. I am also very pleased to meet the local audience again. We tried something new this time, there is no original fiction for mon mon mon MONSTERS, the story therefore has limitless possibilities with no boundaries of creativity. I hope the audience will enjoy this different film of mine.”
Producer Angie CHAI said, “Having worked with Giddens again, our latest film mon mon mon MONSTERS presents an unimaginable magical world to the audience yet it has a touch of cruelty to its reality. The theme is a new attempt but I am confident in Giddens and the cast. I believe the audience would enjoy it.”
mon mon mon MONSTERS: Giddens KO returns to his acclaimed high school bildungsroman after his box-office hit You Are the Apple of My Eye (2011 Summer IFF), only this time it’s not sweethearts his teenage protagonists are pursuing, but mon mon mon MONSTERS! A target of bullying, a gifted student reluctantly joins a rancorous gang of three for a community care assignment, which ends up with a surprise catch of a man-eating little monster. Driven by curiosity, they begin a series of weird research on it as their relationship goes through an intricate change. Inspired by Mikael HÅFSTRÖM’s Swedish feature Evil, this black comedy takes a closer look at the impact of school violence, appealing to our serious reflection beyond just comedy.
